What must NYC self-storage ads disclose about prices?

Last updated October 28, 2026 · Last verified October 28, 2026 against the official sources linked below · General information, not legal advice

Quick answer

From November 1, 2026, a NYC self-storage ad or offer must show the occupancy fee more prominently than other pricing information and clearly disclose its conditions and how long it is guaranteed. Any non-recurring mandatory fee due before move-in must be as prominent as the rate. Claiming occupied units are kept clean is a deceptive practice.

Can I still advertise a first-month promo?

Yes, but the ad must make the occupancy fee more prominent than other pricing information and clearly disclose any conditions and how long the rate is guaranteed (2-496(a)). DCWP also removed the requirement that promotions be listed in the schedule of rates.

Does this cover my website and listings?

The rule covers advertising, displaying or offering storage units for lease (2-496(a)). Separately, your website must post the current master schedule of rates clearly and conspicuously (2-494(c)).

What about admin or lock fees?

The total of any non-recurring mandatory charge required before occupancy must be shown as prominently as the occupancy fee (2-496(a)(3)). The schedule of rates must also list each charge, whether it is mandatory or optional, and its dollar amount (2-491).
