What are the NYC self-storage cleanliness rules?

Last updated October 28, 2026 · Last verified October 28, 2026 against the official sources linked below · General information, not legal advice

Quick answer

From November 1, 2026, a NYC self-storage operator must name an employee who certifies each month that common areas and unoccupied units are free of indoor allergen hazards, such as pests and mold, and that any hazards are being remediated. You do not have to enter occupied units, and pest or mold work can be contracted out.

Does the employee have to inspect every unit?

No. The certification covers common areas and unoccupied units, and the rule says you are not required to access occupied units (2-495(a)).

Can my pest control company sign it?

DCWP says no: the certification must come from your designated employee. The pest or mold work itself can be done by a contractor.

Can I say "clean facility" in ads?

Only if you are meeting the monthly certification and remediation rule (2-496(c)). DCWP says compliant operators can mention their monthly cleanliness verifications in ads.
